WMA additives, including chemical additives and organic waxes, allow the producers of asphaltic pavement material to mix and pave at lower temperatures for more cost-effective paving. Reductions of up to 50°F to 85°F have been documented over the past decade.
There are a variety of benefits to decreased production temperature, including cutting fuel consumption and reduced emissions at paving site. Being able to pave at lower temperatures also allows for:
- Better road compaction, which gives the ability to pave more miles
- The ability to haul paving mix for longer distances
- Extension of the paving season
